In-Home Newborn Sessions | Durham Region

In-Home Newborn Sessions | Durham Region – During my in-home session near the Scarborough Bluffs yesterday, I got chatting with my lovely client about how in-home newborn sessions are so convenient. After having both an in-home Newborn Session (son) and traveling to a studio (daughter) for my newborn sessions, I whole heartedly agree.  My sons newborn session was taken by the amazing Nicola at HulaHoop Photography.

While I don’t think she does newborn sessions any longer, I was lucky to have her come to our home here and Photograph Simon with us. It was so laid back, I felt more comfortable nursing my son in the comfort of our home, and I didn’t have to travel.

For my daughter, we traveled about 45 minutes to Markham to have her newborn photos done at an in-home Photographer studio.  From what I can remember the roads were unbelievably bumpy! Every bump we went over my C-section wound was that much more sore. However, after we arrived I felt at home. Because she used studio light the lighting was consistent, which is one of the differences in studio sessions vs in-home sessions.

When I travel to my clients homes, I bring everything I need. The key word meaning EVERYTHING.

I often joke that I move in for half the day as there is so much stuff I bring. Trekking my 8 foot light is not among those list of items I bring so we rely on the natural light of your home. On overcast days this can sometimes be a challenge if your windows in home home aren’t large or the colouring of your walls aren’t light to bounce/reflect the light.

I arrive to clients home typically around 11:00 or 11:30 if you’re deeper into the city. Apart from my camera, I bring all the outfits, wraps, blankets, hats, flokatis, background and my ottoman poser. It takes a few trips to the car to say the least. Packing it in my van and unpacking it sometimes is half the battle.

Upon arriving, I like to seek out the best spot for light

(but I will have an idea since clients send me photos before booking). Most of the time, we use one designated spot, and at least one with a bedroom.  Sometimes, that serves at both.  This also makes it easier for toddlers, to be in their own home environment. I do have a play area in the studio for toddlers, but I find they, and siblings who are a bit older, are more outgoings at home. And they Love to show off their room! If the light permits, we will get some photos of them being silly in their room!

Both types of sessions have their advantages. You really can’t go wrong with either. We just might have to way for a brighter day to do the in-home session if your home doesn’t have sufficient light, and usually clients are flexible – or they opt to come to the studio last minute and that’s always an option too!

Here are some images of in-home newborn sessions throughout the years.

Much Love,
Stephanie

DURHAM REGION BABY PHOTOGRAPHER | SWEET CALVIN

DURHAM REGION BABY PHOTOGRAPHER | SWEET CALVIN – This little sweetheart came to see me at just three months old and he was all smiles.  Usually during a session, we have to take breaks, give the babe a cuddle and maybe a feed or two, but this little champ powered through his session. He was all smiles and full of many expressions. We were able to do multiple set-ups with Calvin because he was just so chill. I remember this session, which took place almost a year ago now. My Mother-in-law has just made me some new rompers (top center photo) and I was excited to use them. The adorable little brown romper came from Zara Baby, I was lucky to get on clearance a few years ago. It’s definitely a favourite of moms who use the studio wardrobe, so I thought I would just mention where it’s from.  I also have that little romper in it’s reverse, it’s light blue and the pocket is dark blue. Both of them in newborn size (he was wearing the 6 month size).

As I’ve mentioned many times before, my clients are repeats clients, so it’s always so great to be able to see how their families are growing. Calvin’s younger brother, Casey, came to our studio for his newborn photos. His mom and his Aunt (who had flown in from B.C.) both came at that time. You can see that session blogged HERE. I feel they look very handsomely similar, each with their own characteristics.

I hope you all have a great day! xx

PICKERING BABY PHOTOGRAPHER | CHARLOTTE’S MILESTONECHARLOTTE’S MILESTONE

PICKERING BABY PHOTOGRAPHER | CHARLOTTE’S MILESTONE – Since we have our baby promo running, it seemed fitting to do the next few blog posts about what a baby milestone in the studio may look like. When I said there is so many options and clothing, it was an understatement. We always start with (or at least don’t miss) our white bed and do a few poses on there. These images are clean and keeps the focus on your baby, so the imagery remains timeless for years to come. Other items in the studio include: a highchair, rocking chair, a white crib, countless outfits, furry flokatis, headbands, wraps, the list really does go on. While, we do have a lot to choose from, it is not overwhelming. When clients arrive at the studio, I generally already have a preplan in mind, and already know what looks great with what.

It’s important to be flexible even with a plan:

because even babies have colours of clothing that look best on them with their tones. In fact, just yesterday I was in a client’s home, for a lifestyle newborn for their second babe, and since we did the session in their home for their first daughter it was important to mom not to duplicate the same posing and colours and tones. We were literally sitting on the ground, holding up wraps to the baby’s skin tone to make sure it complimented her. This is such an important step not to miss. So while a plan is good, being flexible is more important.

Below is Charlotte, we recently blogged about her outdoor newborn session. You may have seen her older sister Adelaide’s in-home Blog Post. She, too, came in for the baby promo that was run a few years ago (which I haven’t blogged about yet).  Both girls are absolutely stunning – check out those eyes!

PICKERING NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER | WELCOME BABY CHARLOTTE

PICKERING NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHER | WELCOME BABY CHARLOTTE – Looking at these images, while it’s currently minus 12 outside, makes me feel ready for the coldness to be over and summer to arrive.

Before the pandemic, we only offered newborn images inside the studio, but boy was I unaware what the outdoor newborn session could bring. It’s my new obsession with outdoor newborn photography. I will offer it over studio newborn if the weather is right for it.  Keep in mind indoor sessions and outdoors sessions are done at different times of the day.

In studio sessions always start at 11:00 am. This gives the family time to get ready in the morning and get to me on time without the added stress of rushing too early in the morning. Outdoor sessions are done 1.5 hours before the sunset time.

One of my babies was born at the end of April, and the other, end of August. The chance was there to do my sons newborn session outside, had I thought of it I would have (ok, would have done both because it’s technically free). Where was this idea 9.5 years ago?

I love the indoor sessions don’t get me wrong. There is so much to appreciate with indoor sessions such as: controlled temperature, No wind, No bugs, Privacy, cleaner, and I also have a full size bed in the studio with a bathroom and a kids play area… just a few things to consider. BUT – the light – oh that warm sunny golden light, that I crave for every session. It’s just magical. When the stars align an you get a gorgeous summer sunset – you just can’t beat it. Give me the wind, the sand, the bugs, the onlookers, just for that light that peaks between the trees, and the Bokeh like no other.

Ok, now that I’m done gushing about the summer and how much I want it back (yes, I’m over the snow now, it was pretty, now time to go). I’d like to introduce this peach pie, named Charlotte. Those crystal blue eyes and head full of hair, she really can’t get any sweeter.

I photographed her older Sister, Adelaide’s session in their home, you can see that Lifestyle type blog post HERE . And a few more since she was born, so it was so nice to see how much she’s grown and how much she loves her baby sister. She really stepped into the big sister role so adorably. See for yourself…..
